Five Ways Exercise Helps Those with Meniere’s Disease

What is good for the heart and body is often good for your ears.  This is never more true than with exercise.  Exercise can benefit those with Meniere’s disease and help reduce the accompanying symptoms.  I have pointed out the importance of exercise before but I’d like to back that with four reasons why it is so important.  Exercise can…

  1. Reduce stress, reduce anxiety and decrease feelings of depression:  What sufferer of Meniere’s disease couldn’t benefit from all that?  I have talked about the importance of stress reduction before.  I feel that stress reduction is key in controlling the symptoms of Meniere’s disease.
  2. Improve circulation: I have also written before about how blood circulation is crucial to good ear health.  Aerobic exercise will increase your circulation and improve your ears.
  3. Release endorphins: Endorphins are complex proteins with an ability to decrease pain and invoke a sense of well-being.  Endorphins are responsible for the “runner’s high” that is experienced after going out for a job.  We could all use feeling a little better–especially if we are in the throes of the negative situations that Meniere’s disease can create.  Endorphins are also proven to help in wound healing.  They may also assist in other forms of healing but to what extent is yet to be completely determined.
  4. Improve sleep:  I seldom sleep well when travelling.  I used to attribute that to just not sleeping well when not in my own bed.  Another factor that ame into play is that when I am travelling, I am usually not exercising.  Once I figured that out, I made an effort to keep up with my exercise while on the road and I do a much better sleeping at night.  I have also noticed that when I am injured and cannot exercise, the quality of my sleep suffers. Sleep is important in healing. Before, I have shared aids, and supplements that will help you sleep.
  5. gives you a mental boost: The easiest thing to do with Meniere’s disease, is to lay in bed all day. It has little risk.  If you have an attack, you are already in a safe comfortable place.  The problem is you are on the defensive and are not proactively conquering Meniere’s.  If you live your life in bed, you are letting Meniere’s dictate how to live and that puts you at an emotional disadvantage.  You need to have the upper hand and not let Meniere’s keep you sedentary.  Exercise to get out of bed and get moving.

While exercise is good for you and will help you manage your Meneire’s, keep in mind that you need a balanced approach to getting better.  Exercise should be combined with eating well, eliminating unhealthy habits, and proper supplements.  Unfortunately, there is no one silver bullet to cure all your Meniere’s disease woes.

Always check with your doctor before starting an exercise program.  Start easy and slowly build up to more strenuous workouts.  The important thing is to get started.  You may start out by simply going for short walks and build to longer ones.  It is important to get going–especially when you least feel like it.  Get out bed, get out of your house.  You may need to limit the distance you wander from your house but get out and get some exercise. It will do you good.

Aerobic Exercise to Combat Stress

In your quest to conquer Meniere’s disease, you should consider an exercise program.

I would encourage you strongly to start an aerobic exercise program if you have not already. The benefits reach much further than just stress relief; exercise releases endorphins, chemicals that give your mood a happy boost.

If you do not know where to start, take a first step…literally. Walking is free. It does not require special training, a special diet, or membership at a health club. If you are worried that you are not getting your heart rate high enough, walk faster, swing your arms, or find a route that requires going up and down hills.
