3 Supplements to Help You Sleep

Sometimes after all that we do to improve our sleep, we still can’t get the quality of sleep that we desire.  In those cases, you may want to try a supplement to help you sleep better.  You don’t want to take supplements long term but they may be useful in helping you break your sleepless cycle and get back on track.

Below are three supplements worth considering in helping you sleep better.  They can be a healthy alternative to prescription drugs.  As always, consult your physician before taking any supplements.  She will be able to determine if supplements are a proper course of action for your condition.

  1. Melatonin: Melatonin is popular with frequent travelers that must reset their body clock when visiting a different time zone and those that work the graveyard shift.  Melatonin is a natural hormone made in the body and it controls your body’s inner clock.  Levels of melatonin can drop as you age and may need some compensation.
  2. Valerian Root:  When backpacking at higher elevation, I find it difficult to sleep the first night.  Valerian root is very useful in helping me get to sleep in those situations.  Valerian also has the added benefit of helping you deal with stress.  valerian root is available in dry or liquid form capsules.  It is also available as a tea.
  3. 5-HTP: Raising levels of serotonin in the brain promote sleep.  5-HTP is converted by the body into seratonin.  Supplementing with L-Tryptophan has very similar results a 5-HTP.  In general, I don’t sleep well when not at home and I use 5-HTP to help me sleep better.

I use all three of these in different situations.  All have proven helpful.    When using supplements to help sleep, it may take some experimentation to learn the best time to take them to achieve the best results.

Pleasant dreams.
